Samsung LN-T4681F 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight

Samsung LN-T4681F 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight Review

I finally took the plunge for an HD set. At the time that I last set up my home theater - HD had _just_ come on market. Some early CRT-based HD sets were available, but the specification wasn't quite there, and certainly content availability was very low. The sets were _very_ expensive as well. So I simply opted for a high-end Standard Def. set from Sony.

Things were fine for a long time.

Then the LCD sets came on the market. Vendors wanted more money for what was, to my eyes, an inferior picture. CRT based sets were quickly discontinued - not necessarily because LCD technology was superior (it certainly wasn't) - but because such sets take much less floor space on a show room floor. The poor color representation, and pixelization, and motion blur of LCD sets turned me off, and Plasma wasn't much better. I just couldn't see spending more money for a worse picture, even if the set had physical advantages in terms of space, and power savings.

Well, fast forward to today. After looking over several Samsung models - I ended up purchasing this set. It's by no means the current "best available" at this point - but considering the price and quality it's quite good. The black levels on this set are amazing (none of that dark gray = black). The color representation is excellent. And, so far, judder and motion blur seem acceptably low.

Hi-definition sportscasts look amazing. NHL and NBA (currently in-season) look fantastic - the gleam of the ice or the court, or the reflections off the glass barriers is really something to see.

The X-Box 360 looks fantastic in 1080p - and video games don't seem to have any real lag between the control and updates of on-screen action.

The 3:2 pulldown, movie mode (24 fps) looks quite alright so far. Several DVDs (don't have the Blu-Ray yet) look almost Hi-Def when up-sampled (several guests have been amazed that it wasn't actually a Hi-Def source).

All in all, pleasantly happy with this set, and looking forward to several years of viewing pleasure.

Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 46SV670U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight and ClearScan 240, Black

Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 46SV670U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight and ClearScan 240, Black Review

After sniffing out specs on new HDTVs we went to the store to try to compare screens (mostly between the Sharp Aquos, Sony Bravia, and Samsung - in that order.) In the end we decided this one had the best overall brightness and clarity. (This wasn't so easy to determine though because all of the stores feed crappy (relatively), and varying signals into the TVs so that it is difficult if not impossible to compare them. Why? I don't know.)

After using this TV for a month, I'm still very happy with it. Compare that to my experience with our previous HDTV, a DLP type Samsung. This TV starts fast (relatively) and the sound is good even from the built-in speakers. I'm much, much happier with the screen and general response time. Switching channels, turning on, turning off; these may sound like no-brainers but the Samsung DLP would sometimes take over a minute to start, almost as long shutting off, and even took tens of seconds on occasion to switch channels. Also this TV uses about 50% less power than the DLP and was about as low-power as anything in this size of TV we found (because of the LED backlighting it uses less lighting power.)

The main flaw with the Samsung came when it failed completely (green screen of death) after only a little more than two years of use. The problem appeared to be on the board that controls TV signal decoding. Because that problem is possible with any display tech, I'll just have to wait and see if this TV turns out to be more reliable/long lasting. For now it is an order of magnitude improvement over the Samsung DLP, and appeared to have better image quality than the current competition.

Some drawbacks that keep it from perfect scores:
1) There is a border around the screen several inches wide. Obviously the closer to edge-to-edge screen the better since the rest is just distracting away from the image.
2) (a complete surprise!) there is only one coaxial input on the TV. We have been using analog cable and HD over the antennae (airwave broadcast) for years. With this TV, it took us a while to figure out that we could still do this by buying a coaxial switch. Unfortunately that means that to switch from Antennae to Cable requires flipping the manual switch and then changing a setting from the remote control menu. This is tiresome so we have all but abandoned the cable channels completely (on this TV anyway.)

Non-issues: some complain that this TV is too thick (mostly compared to the Samsung model.) We don't wall mount, so for us this is a complete non-issue as you can't tell how thin it is in the entertainment stand. I suppose others might prefer the svelte look of the Samsung but there is something to be said about people who would buy a TV for the look of the case over the look of the TV image it produces (and the reliability of the product too given my previous experience with Samsung TVs.)

Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 55SV670U 55-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight and ClearScan 240, Black

Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 55SV670U 55-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight and ClearScan 240, Black Review

I consider myself a tech savvy. I've been following consumer TV lineups and technology for months. from samsung to vizio, yes I checked them all out! This Toshiba does it the best in its class with solid picture quality and performance. if you are looking for an eye candy go get a samsung, but if you want performance in all aspects then this TV is for you.

I bought this set from amazon and had it for about 2 weeks now. The picture is amazing and the blacks are inky, deepest I've seen around! video processing is outstanding, handles motion really well. This LED TV delivers a great cinema-like experience.

Pros:

-Stylish single glass design
-Deepest inky blacks - Kuro like
-superior video processing - nicely removes judder and blur without adding video-game look
-amazing screen uniformity
-packed with pro-settings and tweaking menus, graphs, ambient light sensor and auto brightness feature
-Local dimming in its best
-no blooming, clouding, ghosting or flashing issues (known issues with LCDs)
-details in gray-black tones visible
-great value

cons:

-reflective screen (helps to achieve better contrast but could be an issue if you have a lot of windows)
-heavy

I'm very happy I returned my samsung LED for this unit. samsung LEDs (6000, 7000 and 8000 series) suffer from screen uniformity issues!
Buy this unit and you won't be sorry.
